7 Easy Ways To Cozy Up Your Home For Fall

What is it about fall that makes you want to wrap up in a cozy quilt with a warm bowl of homemade soup?

All of the familiar sights, sounds, tastes, and smells take us instantly to that place of “cozy”. The slight coolness in the air, the musty sweet smell of leaves on the ground, and the unmistakable fall colors: orange, gold, brown, and tan.

Traditionally, fall was marked by the harvest. The sights, sounds smells and flavors were all associated with the food and grain being harvested and prepared to last through the winter.

Even though we’re no longer harvesting our wheat fields, we can still bring the look and feel of fall to our homes, and create a soothing, cozy environment.

Here are 7 simple things you can do to cozy up your home for fall.

    1- Pull out the blankets.

Nothing says fall like a cozy throw on the arm of a couch. It’s like an open invitation to snuggle up with a mug of cocoa. You can quickly add that warmth to your living room by bringing in a quilt, throw blanket, or afghan rich in fall colors.

2- Change out your throw pillows.

Throw pillows in golds, oranges, and browns can instantly bring a warm cozy feeling to any living room or bedroom. Swap out the pillows you currently use for pillows in hues of brown, gold, orange, and tan. You will be amazed at how quickly it brings a feeling of warmth to the room.

3- Add a splash of fall color to your houseplants.

While the leaves outside are changing color, your houseplants are not. To mimic the color of the autumn leaves, try adding a sprig of red or yellow leaves (real or silk) to your houseplants. It will bring the feeling of the turning fall leaves right into your home.

4- Bring nature inside.

Decorating with natural elements like acorns, pine cones, pumpkins, gourds, and ears of dried corn will bring the beloved reminders of the harvest into your home. You can use these items as a centerpiece in the dining room, or anywhere in the house you want to increase the cozy factor.

5- Make a warm fragrant drink.

Wassail isn’t only for Christmas! The flavor of apple juice, combined with cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and mace, makes a soothing, warm autumn-inspired drink. Plus, it fills your home with all of the same fragrances you smell when you're baking apple pie, without baking the pie.

6- Warm up the crockpot.

Soups and stews are the ultimate comfort food for fall! To bring that cozy fall feeling into your kitchen, try making a stew from scratch. You’ll fill your home with the rich smell of slowly simmered stew, with the added bonus of a soothing hot meal.

7- Bask in the glow of firelight.

There’s nothing as cozy as a fire on a fall evening. If you aren’t one of the lucky few with a fireplace in your home, bring in the candles!

Candles add the warm, golden glow of a fire to your cool fall evenings. As a bonus, you can use a candle with an autumn-inspired scent, and you'll find yourself in cozy autumn bliss.
